Fireweed-Wildflowers in the City is a one day educational event created by artists; Liz Davies, Clare Gerrard and Sussana Jacobs, for Super Estate Projects.

Since Golden Lane Estate was built in the 50s & 60s, the natural enviroment of the area has changed drastically. It was once surrounded by bomb sites and ruins, and yet full of wildlife, plants and birds. Now very little wildlife remains as the empty sites are built on. Churchyards, gardens and streets are routinely cleared of weeds. What is the future of natural wildlife in the square mile?

Focussing on the past and present flora and fauna of the City, the event displayed a wealth of specimens and survey prepared by Gerrard. With support from the Natural History Museum, Davies led the flower pressing workshop. Jacobs hosted a drawing and video session with the children in which an endearing animation imagining the wildlife live freely in the estate was created.

This event is kindly sponsered by City of London Police. The artists would like to thank Dr. Mark Spencer and Liz Jellinek of the Naural History Museum for their support and expertise. Also to Lee at Plaisterers’ Hall and Clare Maddison.

Fireweed – Wildflowers in the City is a creative event for the Super Estate Projects to engage the local communities, and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Golden Lane Estate.
