Golden Lane Jewellery is an exhibition created with students on the Jewellery making course at City of London Community Education Centre (COLCEC). Run by City of London’s Adult Skills and Community Learning Service in partnership with Hackney Community College. The group meet for three hours once a week to produce handmade pieces from their own designs. Making the jewellery involves a number of different techniques and each item displays a high standard of finish.

The course itself sets out to develop students’ basic skills and ultimately aims to encourage their individual design and production process. Throughout their time students may learn a set of skills that can include stone setting, enamelling, etching, filigree or beading.

The would-be Jewellers are a mixed ability group, comprised of beginners and those returning to develop skills. With an enrolment of approximately 12 students every term, the course is a dynamic mixture of local people, those travelling from the regions and international students.

Interestingly, this unique course is often a springboard for progression onto further education. Some of its recent alumni were awarded places on the Masters in Jewellery at London Metropolitan University, an NVQ at Holts Jewellery Academy and a City and Guilds course at The City Literary Institute.
