LILITH by Douglas White
EXHIBIT Studio was commissioned by British artist Douglas White to light his debut solo exhibition, LILITH, at Paradise Row in May 2007.
The body of work is predominantly created using found and discarded materials configured in strange and compelling sculptural works that sidestep the distinction between figuration and abstraction. White’s work is astonishing yet delicate and this demanded no ordinary way of lighting to visualise the power of his sculpture.
In order to experience the very undefined quality of the work and not overstating the sculptural existence, the use of direct spotlight from the gallery was minimised. Each art work was gently lit by a cool white LED source, either carefully placed near the sculpture with minimum visual distraction; or through a bespoke integration within the sculpture itself. Each subtly illuminated sculpture captures the viewers’ attention along their journey, expressing its individual story.
The centre piece, The Story of Owl (2007), comprises a freestanding, framed pane of glass bearing the faint, greasy imprint of an owl with its wings outstretched. The print was left by the unfortunate creature itself when it flew, directly into a patio window. The barely visible imprint is quietly revealed by a small moon-white LED light suspended from the ceiling, unleashing the mystical presence of a ghostly silhouette in the dark gallery space.
