A pilot project for the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) to create a three-day design training initiative for people with spinal-cord injuries.

The workshop anticipate that working with people with spinal cord injuries on new models of design training focused on creative resourcefulness would yield knowledge with potential for widespread replication among other groups
of people whose independence, fulfilment and social participation are challenged, and who may need to be especially resourceful.

Worked with Emily Campbell (Former RSA director of design) and product design tutor, Pascal Anson, Yanki was one of the project leaders enabling people with spinal-cord injuries to learn about design thinking. Together, they designed and ran a three-day residential workshop in design for eight people with spinal-cord injuries. The workshop encouraged participants to apply creative thinking and resourcefulness to their difficulties with the long-term goal of rebuilding confidence following their injury.

Supported by the Back-Up Trust the whole process gave participants the opportunity to unlock their creativity through a range of activities, in the categories of observation, analysis and opportunity. These included photographing 100 examples of the same thing, devising a cocktail to represent another participant and translating a work of fiction into a restaurant concept.
